Charlottesville Gives Police Chief Full Power To Institute Curfew | The Daily Caller
The Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to empower the police chief to regulate, restrict or prohibit the movement of any persons or vehicles in the city.
During an emergency meeting at the Albemarle County Office Building, the council granted Charlottesville Chief of Police Al Thomas broad authority to keep people off the streets following the violence in Charlottesville.
The emergency meeting came after clashes between white supremacists, Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and other counter-protesters descended in chaos. (RELATED: At Least Three Dead In Charlottesville)
“The Council’s decision to give Chief Thomas the authority to enact a curfew as appropriate was made out of an abundance of caution,” Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said in a statement. “We did so, having full confidence in Chief Thomas and regional law enforcement’s ability to make the final call.”
As of 9 p.m. local time, Thomas had not yet taken any action.
