Clean water advocate lets Commissioner Detert know what he thinks about her communication to the constituents and her lackadaisical thoughts on red tide.

After Jen Morganti Palmer was rudely treated at the county meeting, I fired off an email to Nancy Detert. The exchange:

Nancy-

Those mote scientists you support told the folks in Venice last month “nutrients enhance the bloom inshore” and “it would be a good idea to stop dumping nutrients into the gulf.”

Why would you support an organization then ignore their advice? Madness.

NOT reporting on this carnage is irresponsible. The very day you condescended to Mrs Palmer during public commentary, there was a news crew on Siesta Key reporting on fish kill. The county, indeed the whole state, needs to take untreated runoff into the gulf a hell of a lot more seriously than they have in the past or our piece of paradise will be a wasteland.

What were YOU doing about unfettered pollution in the forty years you’ve lived here?!

Like I said before, YOU are part of the problem.

See you soon.

Thank you for your email.

I have lived here for 40 years. I have seen a lot of red tide. This is probably the worst I have seen. The other bad year was around 2000. I have attended more meetings on the origin of red tide than most people. I worked for 16 years in the legislature to fund Mote Marine’s red tide research. The Coral Reef license plate was my bill and that plate generates 1 million dollars a year to Mote for coral reef research.

Subject: It’s not going away

Ms. Detert

I am alarmed by the level of condescension you express toward your constituents. You are our elected representative and should treat people with more respect.

As for the red tide “going away,” it’s baaaack. Fish kill, large blooms and red tide smell at Venice pier this morning. You are part of the problem.
