North Port: City is encouraging residents to explore parks, recreational activities as part of Parks & Recreation Month this July
The Parks & Recreation Division will be offering a variety of activities in July to encourage residents to explore local parks and participate in different recreational programs, including a geocaching event on July 15, 2017.
“We want to encourage all residents to get out and experience play during Parks & Recreation Month,” said Jonathan Wheatley, Interim Parks and Recreation Manager. “We hope that people will visit parks, check out our fitness and recreation programs, and take part in our planned events.”
Throughout the month, the City will be highlighting ways that residents can experience play and spend time together in the City’s parks system.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 15, 2017, the City will host a Cache Quest. Set up like a geocache scavenger hunt, residents will simply need a smart phone and the ability to drive to several of the City’s local parks to play. A registration form can be downloaded from the City’s website or picked up at the Morgan Family Community Center. Those who participate will need to return the completed form to the Morgan Family Community Center or email the completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org before 4 p.m. that day to be entered into a drawing to win a family four pack of movie tickets.
“The geocaching event is designed to introduce people to parks that they might never have been to before,” Wheatley said. “We are hoping that families will spend that Saturday together exploring what North Port has to offer.”
Earlier this year, the City announced it had been designated a Playful City USA for the eighth consecutive year. Sponsored by KaBOOM!, the Playful City USA designation places North Port among 258 communities nationwide and among 36 communities in the State of Florida. The designation is based on the City’s continued focus on creating playful places so that children can learn, grown, and develop important life skills.
The National Recreation and Parks Association is celebrating the month of July by hosting a weekly contest encouraging people to show them why play is so important in their lives. Visit www.nrpa.org/July for more information on how to participate. Entries can be submitted via the hashtag #NRPAPlayChallenge. NRPA also encourages all people that support parks and recreation to share why they think play is so important with the hashtag #PlayOnJuly.
