Sarasota Sheriff Deputies responded to a missing diver near Manasota Key

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting a death investigation.

Deputies initially responded at approximately 10:22 a.m. to the 8500 block of Manasota Key Road to assist marine units from the Venice Fire Department in locating a missing diver. Preliminary investigation revealed there was one boat operator and three divers on the vessel. One of the divers went missing and was soon located by members of the Venice Fire Department in the Gulf of Mexico. Upon discovery, officials confirmed the diver was deceased. The decedent has been identified as James E. Little, DOB 06/09/57, of Venice.

The incident launched a multi-agency response from the United States Coast Guard, FWC, Venice Fire Department and Sarasota County Emergency Services.

The investigation is continuing and as always, an official cause of death will be determined and released by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
