Sarasota County residents need to understand the importance of being a voice in the for the community | The Scoop News

I wanted to illustrate that the whole premise behind my run for Mayor, was to challenge Holic versus letting him just walk into office and to illustrate the community’s frustration with all the over development. In my mind it was not to win because I knew Holic had the money and the backing of too many special interest.
As we are now seeing with some of their decisions, it was effective in driving change. Here are a few of the changes that we have seen:
- Parking lot in no man’s land. Last week they put off building a 500k parking lot south of Sharkey’s. I have seen where the cost of this project was in-between 475k and 650k, which leads to that fuzzy math. I pounded this project, to illustrate the cities frivolous spending habits.
- A project priority list. The city is now having the City Manager prioritize all the issues that need resolved, from repairing the fire department buildings to building a new police station. Then they will have a document that will give them some better incite, when it comes to budgeting money. This was an issue that I pushed during the campaign run.
- As you may have read from the report yesterday, Venice is now considering a slowdown in growth. You can hear that report at: https://www.thescoopradioshow.com/video-report-venice-could-be-seeing-self-imposed-slow-down-in-growth-and-development-wwsb/. As everyone knows, this was one of my core issues that I pushed against the pro-aggressive development Holic.
- This amount of time that the trolley will be on the street has fluctuated. So, I had a variety of numbers that I threw out there during the campaign. Kimmel with the Herald decided to inaccurately report that my math was fuzzy, without reporting that it was fuzzy because Holic changed the amount of time the trolley would be here about four times……… All of my attention to this issue, brought about the changing of the trolley route to make it less of a tourist attraction. Also, it has a few people out there decrying that the trolley was to alleviate parking, not tourism and that the city needs to get back to the core focus of this program.
My point with all of this is not to pat myself on the back for being right and driving change. My point is to illustrate to everybody that you do have a voice and you can affect change. As you can see, I lost the election, yet a lot of my concerns were heard and it has affected some change.
Some of you may state that you do not have the platform that I do and you will not be heard. This is far from the truth! I read the city server email daily and you would be amazed to see that the council often acts, just because one person is vocal enough to write them. Not just one email, but several. All too often the changes that we see around the city are driven by one vocal resident, a council members pet project or a push by special interest.
