Local governments including the City of Venice will no longer regulate the operation of ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft.

Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation in May creating uniform rules for app-based ridesharing services across the state, overriding an array of local regulations like those in Venice. The law goes into effect July 1.

“Florida is one of the most business-friendly states in the nation because of our efforts to reduce burdensome regulations and encourage innovation and job creation across all industries, including transportation. I look forward to seeing the continued growth of ridesharing companies in our state,” Scott said in a statement.

The new law:

· Sets minimum insurance levels

· Requires ridesharing companies to conduct background checks on drivers

· Institutes a zero-tolerance policy for drug and alcohol use

· Requires fare transparency so passengers can estimate their costs before riding

· Requires drivers to comply with a nondiscrimination policy
